When to Book Christmas Light Installation in Utah (Earlier Than You Think)

Here's the uncomfortable truth about professional holiday lighting: the season is about six weeks long, and a good crew can only physically install five to six homes a day.

That math doesn't stretch. When the calendar is full, it's full — and every year, the calls that come the week before Thanksgiving mostly get turned away. Here's the real timeline.

August: returning customers lock the calendar first

At Alta, returning customers get their renewal invoice on August 1. Most pay within a couple of weeks, and each payment locks an install date. By Labor Day, a meaningful slice of October and November is already spoken for.

This is the quiet reason the industry feels "full" earlier than people expect — the calendar starts the season partially booked. About 90% of our customers return, and they own their lights, so their year-two install is fast and cheap to schedule.

September: the best month for new customers

If you're hiring an installer for the first time, September is your window. Quotes are unhurried, every install week is still open, and there's time to measure your roofline properly and order the right materials.

September booking also means you can pick your look without compromise — warm white, multicolor, a candy-cane rhythm — because nothing has run short yet. If you're still comparing companies, these seven questions will sort them quickly.

October: the calendar tightens week by week

The first two weeks of October are still workable. By the back half, crews along the Wasatch Front are installing daily and new slots come from cancellations.

A note for new construction and remodels: if your fascia or gutters are being worked on, schedule lights for after that work finishes. October is when those collisions surface.

November: hope for a cancellation

Early November bookings still happen, but you're choosing from what's left, not what you want. After Veterans Day, most reputable installers are waitlist-only. The companies still promising "next-day install" on November 20th are the ones worth being suspicious of — ask them the mounting-system question and listen carefully.

Why "first snow" is the worst trigger

Most people's instinct is to think about lights when the first storm lands. By then, three things are true: the calendar is nearly full, roof work is slower and riskier, and crews are working short daylight hours.

The homeowners who are relaxed in December are the ones who acted in September.

What booking early actually gets you

  • Your date, not a leftover date — including before-Thanksgiving lighting
  • Your design — full material availability, time for a careful measurement
  • A calmer install — dry roofs, longer days, unhurried crews
  • For returning customers: nothing to do at all — pay the August invoice and you're locked

Our quote takes about three minutes and includes an instant estimate — start here. If install slots are running low when you visit, you'll see the live count on the quote page; that number is computed from our actual crew calendar, not marketing.

Questions we hear about this

When should I book Christmas light installation in Utah?

September is the ideal month for new customers — full calendar availability and unhurried quotes. By late October, slots are scarce; by mid-November, most reputable installers are waitlist-only.

When do Christmas light installers start installing?

Most professional crews along the Wasatch Front begin installing in early-to-mid October. Lights can be installed weeks before you turn them on — early installation doesn't mean early lighting.

Can I get lights installed the week of Thanksgiving?

Sometimes, but only from a cancellation. The week before Thanksgiving is the single highest-demand window of the season, and crews are usually fully committed by then.

Do returning customers get priority booking?

At Alta, yes — returning customers receive their renewal invoice August 1, and paying it locks their install date before new-customer booking peaks.
